In the middle of flat farming fields surrounded by mountains in every direction, there’s a small house with a red roof. This is “Cafe Tekuri.” The shop name comes from an old Japanese word “Tekuri Tekuri” and “Teku teku” which means “to walk slowly at your own pace.” That’s what the couple owning this wonderful gem of a restaurant wanted to do when they started looking around Hokkaido for their own restaurant. It had been their dream to open a cafe, and Furano was especially welcoming. The name “Tekuri” also refers to “handmade.” Their wooden house with large windows to enjoy the view, and pizza oven to make amazing pizzas with local ingredients, are specially crafted by hand.
When asked, “what makes Furano so special?” Owner Yusuke Takeuchi replied:
“Of course, Furano produce is delicious, the view is great, and you can enjoy the calm life of the countryside, but the best part of Furano… is the people. Everyone is so close and nice. We’ve been supported by so many people. If something happens, we help each other out. I’d say the most attractive thing about Furano is its people.”
